Session #100: The Red-Hot Labour Market: Insights from the Career Development Professional Community
Job vacancies in Canada remain at an all-time high and unemployment at an all-time low, despite high-profile tech layoffs, rising inflation and the looming threat of recession. This past year, Canadian employers actively sought to fill more than one million positions. A CERIC Environics survey of 500 Canadian employers, published in 2022, showed that 81% are facing difficulty finding the right talent, 40% are losing talent to other organizations, and while 73% agree employee career management programs are important, only 30% of employers actually provide these programs.

Similarly, the Deloitte 2023 Global Human Capital Trends report notes that, of workers who quit in 2021, 63% did so because they saw no opportunities for advancement. Between changing jobseeker priorities and urgent employer needs, career development professionals in Canada are uniquely situated mediate and bridge the gap while supporting both communities.
